Voyageurs and Winter
Little is actually known about the Voyageurs and their winter habits. It is believed that many returned home to their families and rested. Others stayed in the North Country....
Those who stayed often passed the idle time by ferrying goods and mail via Dogsled from outpost to outpost. If you're hungry for a taste of Voyageur life during the winter seek out a local dogsled team and give it a try! We may even know of a Voyageur family with active teams in the Aidrondack North Country!
In addition to dogsledding many Voyageurs worked as fishermen, hunters and trappers. If dogsledding isn't found in your area but snow is..try some winter snowshoeing, nordic skiing or ice fishing.
If staying warm is more your idea.. Now is the perfect time to sit by the fire and read about the Adirondack Park or study the maps planning your spring and summer adventures.
